Processes locking

Post by dsrolfe »

Hi. When converting a slew of flac files to ogg format, I occasionally get a conversion thread to fail to complete, locking the thread for that session. This has been happening a lot more lately, usually causing all 4 threads to stop and the program to hang. (I have a screen shot of the last time this happened, but I don't know how to attach it here.) I'm using the latest oggenc2 from www.rarewares.com, but it was happening with the older version as well. Does anyone know how to resolve this??

Is this also happening when you use the oggenc2 which is shipped with the program?
Also, are you using a custom command line?

Yes. It happens with the oggenc2 that ships with the product with the latest version (1.153) of xrecode3-64bit. My PC has two cores and four threads with hyper-threading. It happens consistently when I use the default processing setting 'All Cores' and 4 threads run. I ran another test limiting the processes to 2 threads and it didn't fail. (Of course, ripping is slowed down a lot.) Could there be a different system resource that I'm running low on??

No custom command line, just quality set to 6.

Is this happening with the ogg only? Does it work when you encode to e.g. mp3 (using all cores)?
Is it locking when you set the max cores to use to 3?
Also, are you using an antivirus and what's the Windows version?

Ogg and flac are all I use. I'm not a fan of MP3, but I could run a test or two.

Yes, with 3 cores I'll generally get a lock.

I'm using Windows 10 latest and Trend Micro Internet Security. I could try disabling the AV to see what happens.

I kicked off another test with 2 cores and I've got a stuck process. I'm going to kill this and see if I can disable the AV.

I just did a test on Windows 10 x64 with Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz, 2501 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s).
I converted flac files to ogg using all cores several times and could not reproduce the issue.
No special antivirus, just the built in Defender.
Were you converting from/to local drive? Is it happening with all or just some specific files?

I turned off the AV, ran with 4 cores and it happened again. :-(
It's happening with different files each time.
It's a local to local...same hard drive

Here are some system specifics:

Processor: AMD A8-6500 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 3.50 GHz
Installed RAM: 6.00 GB (5.20 GB usable)

Windows 10 Home
Version 22H2
OS build 19045.4651

When the conversion core 'sticks', the bar is completely green and then hangs. The program will continue to process files with the remaining 'working' cores until either another gets stuck or it finishes the rest. When all are done, the four bars can look like this:

[29/4612] D:\ogg\flac\AppleFiona\IdlerWheelThe\04.ogg
[4612/4612] D:\ogg\flac\Zsela\BigForYou\10.ogg
[4611/4612] D:\ogg\flac\Zsela\BigForYou\09.ogg
[656/4612] D:\ogg\flac\CortotAlfred\WarnerClassics\45.ogg

You can tell from the numbers in the rows that line 1 & 4 were stuck at various points of the processing. Lines 2 & 3 never got stuck and ran to the end of the set of files. The program never completed though and I had to kill it. XRECODE3 has worked well up until recently. :?
